Colombia is located in the northwest corner of South America and has coasts on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It has a total area of 1´141,748 km2, making it the fourth largest country in the subcontinent and the second largest population (51.05 million people). Five of its main cities currently have more than one million inhabitants.

In the past five years, the mining sector has represented 2% of Colombian GDP, generating around 167,000 direct jobs and more than one million indirect jobs through its productive chains, contributing more than USD11.5 billion in taxes and royalties to the country during the last decade. Additionally, the latest report of the annual mining and exploration survey of the Fraser Institute of Canada, which measures investment attraction indexes, best practices and mineral potential, for the first time ranked Colombia as a leader in these indexes in the Latin America and Caribbean Basin region, improving its position worldwide; this demonstrates the mining potential that Colombia has.

With a GDP of USD 330.5 trillion (2021), Colombia is the fourth largest economy in Latin America after Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. Over the last 10 years, the country has had an average of 2.9% GDP growth, reflecting a stable and conservative government economic policy.
